Greetings Paddling Friends!

Date: 8/18/2009

River Conditions: Wow.... is the river looking good. Clear, cool, sparkling like no other. The only way it could look any better is if you & your family & friends were doing that beautiful dance with craft and current. The river is ready when you are!

As the Manistee is a less flashy river, we continue to rent canoes and kayaks there. However, on the Pine it looks like we’ll be renting only rafts for the next few days. We’re thinking the Pine will be down enough by Tuesday or Wednesday to resume renting canoes & kayaks.

River Access Site Re-construction, 2009: Through the 2009 construction season, one at a time, the USFS Access Sites will be up-graded to address erosion, parking, and traffic flow issues. Our service to our guests will not be interrupted as we have options to make sure you get to paddle the stretch of river you want to paddle. The upgrades at the Low Bridge and Dobson Bridge Access Sites are completed. Beginning 8/13, the Elm Flats Access Site we’ll be closed for approximately 2 weeks.

Reminders for folks paddling their personal craft: It just got more expensive for you to paddle the Pine. USFS Parking Pass fees have been raised to $5/day, $15/week. Also remember that beginning May 15 you must also have a river-use permit from the USFS. Permits can again be reserved at the US Forest Service Baldwin District Office for $2/craft. Call 231-745-4631 to check availability and reserve your permits.

Please Remember: Alcohol and river-sports are a destructive mix. For safety, social, and resource protection considerations, please wait until you're off the river and off the road, before partaking of any alcohol. Please also remember that Styrofoam packaging or coolers, glass, water balloons, and firecrackers are prohibited on the river. Thanks for preventing litter by using your litter-bag and making sure all cargo is securely tied to your craft.
