Scout Paddle and Camp Packages - Manistee River Michigan

Scout troops have found the Big Manistee River to be the most favorable river in the Midwest for multi-day camping trips. It is blessed with a forested riverscape, clean & clear water, moderate current, good fishing, and has conveniently spaced campgrounds for scouts who enjoy carrying their camping gear with them on extended paddle/camp trips. Visit our Manistee River page for more information on river, maps, etc.

Hodenpyle Dam to Red Bridge is a gorgeous stretch of river. The water is crystal-clear, there is no development, and it is the most spirited stretch of the Manistee River. This trip takes about 4 hours to paddle; stopping along the way to relax, wade, fish, swim, etc. will add to the time of this trip.

Kayaking under the suspension bridge just downstream from Hodenpyle Dam. This bridge connects the Manistee River Trail (south side of river) to the North Country Trail (north side of river).

Multi-day canoe trips

The jury is in and the consensus is that the Big Manistee River is the best river in the Midwest for groups seeking to take their gear with them on multi-day canoe trips. Regularly spaced campgrounds make it easy for groups to enjoy trips anywhere from two to ten days in length. Coupling the time spent on the water, in the wild, around a campfire at night, the laughter, the learning---the experience is absolutely priceless.

The folks at PRPC really get jazzed up about facilitating trips for scouts and their leaders. You’ll see that we’ve tried to make this paddle/camp-trip very affordable.

Depending on the number of days of rental, and number of canoes rented:

  • The cost for canoes begins at $12/person/day to $24/person/day.
  • The cost for kayaks begins at $20/person/day to $32/person/day.

A Popular Hike – Camp - Paddle Trip

We are facilitating an increasing number of group outings that incorporate camping, paddling, and hiking. The most popular outing begins with the group hiking the Manistee River Trail northeast from Red Bridge. Depending on the start they get, the group will camp at one of the designated trailside campsites, or at Seaton Creek Campground on the Hodenpyle Reservoir. The following morning, at a rendezvous time determined by you, we will meet the Troop at the Woodpecker Creek Access with whatever canoes, kayaks, and equipment you need. Your Troop then paddles the Manistee River back down to Red Bridge where your cars are safely parked. It’s a gorgeous two-day outing with lots of Merit Badge opportunities. See http://www.thepineriver.com/files_88232jk/pdf/cm_manisteeriver_trail.pdf which shows the Manistee River trail and the designated campsites along the way.

Caution: These are irresistible, memory-carving, character-carving trips that you’ll want to repeat year after year.
